Padel at MyPad

Posted Now: April 25, 2023

At MyPad, we’re really fortunate to have sports facilities on site in The Quadrant and we also have plenty of colleagues who are keen to get involved in a bit of competition (or just exercise) too.

Padel (or Paddle) is a favourite – it seems to fit the company name!

The game is a hybrid of squash and tennis played with a perforated racket – no strings attached. According to an article in The Guardian in February, there are already more people playing padel than tennis in Spain, Portugal and Sweden so we’re right on trend.

Decathlon, the sports retailer, sells all the kit and says its popularity has “come from nowhere” and it could “become the next big UK participation sport.” The big advantage over tennis is that you can pick it up quite easily and get to a level where you can play a good game. And the walls of the court mean there’s less running after the ball too!

If you’d like to know more, there’s a whole area on the Lawn Tennis Association website just about padel.

As well as the padel teams, a group of us use the gym in the building on a regular basis and there’s a boxercise class on a Wednesday that some of us have got involved with too. It all helps us get to know each other outside of work, make connections and build the team.

STOP PRESS: A few of us will be running (or crawling) The Wolf Run at Stanford Hall in Leicestershire at the end of June – and we’re expecting to get VERY muddy as well as exhausted. If you’d like to sponsor our fundraising in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, we’ve a Crowdfunding page here.
